Description

A space for creation and writing devoted to lifes different possible paths, a place for questioning both stage and actor. These three new texts in development take to the stage in a series of public laboratories, allowing three writers in residence to produce and present excerpts from their new creations. This year, three feminist plays in progress are presented to an audience for the first time, in order to nourish the process of artists in Greater Sudbury.

What is all this theatrical jargon?

Public reading: This is the oral presentation of a text or play, with the text in hand. The goal is to introduce the audience to the work, and sometimes with actors, with the vision of eventually having a director and a theatrical performance.

Laboratory Theatre: This is the stage of the show that is in development. Think of a scientific experiment, but in a theatrical setting. We look at how the audience reacts, in order to feed and improve the text and the eventual show. It’s exploration at work.

The three texts to be presented

Ragtime Gal by France Huot: This is a comic-clown theatrical writing project that highlights the tensions between burnout and menstruation through a duo: Gisèle, a burnout manager, and Janine, her menstrual clot that never leaves her.

La quête du sombre by Mariana Lafrance : “Several springs ago, I unwittingly witnessed the death of a bat. It happened on the porch of the country hut that had sheltered me throughout the winter, in the early stages of my recovery from a burnout suffered in the offices of a natural history museum…”. These are the beginnings of an allegorical tale of thirst for a shared, lighter mourning… a mourning for the erosion of human sensuality and sensitivity in connection with the natural world.

Le téton tardif by Caroline Raynaud : Breasts. Because they would make her a woman, she thought at the age of 11. The desire to have breasts and the lack of them, the models of femininity in newspapers, on TV and in society, crystallize this belief. Then the story unfolds, asking the question “What makes a woman?”
